Gila Ridge Academic Decathlon Team wins super quiz at district scrimmage

The Gila Ridge High School Academic Decathlon Team won the Super Quiz event at the Yuma Union High School District Scrimmage on Dec. 7-8, 2018. Kofa High School hosted the annual event.

The team is made up of sophomores through seniors assembled from students in the Academic Decathlon class taught by Gila Ridge teacher Tricia Ellsworth.

“These kids have worked hard to prepare for this scrimmage and this will help us for our upcoming regionals,” said Ellsworth. “We have made state every year and that is quite an accomplishment and our goal is to do so again this year.”

The regional competition will be held the first weekend in February at Flowing Wells High School in Tucson. One standout for the Hawks during the district scrimmage was Brandon Sarrasin, who was the top scorer for the Gila Ridge team.

“We have a very strong group and competition amongst the class is very strong, which helps us in our competitions,” Ellsworth added.
