YUHSD partners with ASU to offer Special Education Parent Academy

Yuma Union High School District is collaborating with Arizona State University to host a four-night Parents Academy for parents of special education students.

The academy is slated to take place in the YUHSD Board Room (3150 S. Avenue A, Building B) from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 26 and continue weekly through Nov. 16. Parents/guardians are encouraged to commit to attending all four sessions. While topics will vary, each session will build upon learning from the previous session. Children and parents are welcome.

“We are committed to every student being college, career, and community prepared,” YUHSD Executive Director of Special Services Suman Pangasa said. “We believe that the success of our students at school is greatly affected by their parents’ involvement at every level of the child’s educational experience. This is particularly important for students with exceptional needs, for whom parents often do not get as involved as they would like because they don’t fully understand the system.”

Topics are expected to include: Special Education Law; Preparing for Individualized Education Program (IEP) meeting; Nuts and Bolts of an IEP; Transition for Post School
