SLHS Counseling Director selected as panelist for state-wide FAFSA kickoff

Cesar CastilloSan Luis High School Counseling Director Cesar Castillo will be a keynote panelist on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021 for Arizona’s state-wide Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) kickoff event.

The event, which takes place from 9:30-11:30 a.m., helps launch the annual opening of the so-called “FAFSA window” on October 1 across the United States. It is intended to convey best practices and generate excitement for counseling departments, teachers, and administrators as they prepare to assist students with the FAFSA. It is a free virtual presentation open to educators across the state.

Keynote speakers will include Governor Doug Ducey, Kaitlin Harrier- Education Policy Adviser, Superintendent of Public Instruction Kathy Hoffman, and Rich Nickel- President and CEO of Education Forward Arizona with panelists and breakout sessions to follow.

Castillo was selected, in part, because of the school’s consistent success in application completion rate. San Luis has been named the FAFSA MVP for large schools in the state of Arizona for two consecutive years. The school has used innovative practices to get applications completed, including FAFSA nights, drive-through events, viral videos, and more.

SLHS students had a 76 percent college-going rate in 2017 and have exceeded 60 percent postsecondary enrollment for six consecutive years.
