Kofa student qualifies for All-State Band

Argenis MercadoKofa senior Argenis Mercado was named to the Arizona and Orchestra Directors Association All-State band this year, placing fourth chair (first flute).

Mercado has been in the West Region Band for three consecutive years. This year the event was held virtually due to COVID-19 restrictions, but Argenis was still thrilled to have been accepted.

"Even though it has been affected by COVID-19, it was an immense honor to have found out I made such a talented ensemble with fantastic players,” Mercado said. “It has been a result of many years of stress, dedication, and perseverance. It has been a dream of mine to perform in this band and I'm glad to say my dream has become a reality."

Argenis' next move will be to audition for the Phoenix Youth Symphony Orchestra and also audition for ensembles at the University of Arizona, where he will attend in the fall. The All-State performance will take place virtually on May 1, 2021 at 11 a.m. Argenis is the only Yuma-area musician to make All-State band this year.
