Cibola finishes 17th in state Academic Decathlon

Cibola High School took 17th place at the state Academic Decathlon competition on March 12-13, 2021. It’s the ninth consecutive time the Raiders advanced to the state finals.

Gila Ridge High School’s David Zaragoza earned a gold medal in the Honors Essay portion of the virtual event. He was the only medalist from Yuma Union High School District.

The Raiders compiled 30,990.1 team points. Gila Ridge finished 24th and Kofa High School finished 25th to round out the 25-school field.

“Even though it was a frustrating year for the Yuma schools, the three of us still finished in the top 25 at state,” Cibola Academic Decathlon Adviser Dan Zarbock said. “All schools across the state were affected by the pandemic this year, so many of them had lower scores, missing members, or even no functioning program.”

Chandler High School edged out Canyon del Oro for the third year in
a row by a 60.6-margin.
