YUHSD winter sports to begin season with modified practice schedule

Yuma Union High School District winter athletic programs will begin the 2020-21 season with a modified, non-contact practice schedule on Monday, Nov. 9, 2020.

Modifications are following Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) guidelines, which include enhanced social distancing with an emphasis on conditioning, and restrictions on shared equipment.

According to thresholds defined by the Arizona Department of Health Services, eight counties across the state, including Yuma County, are considered to have substantial community spread of COVID-19.

  • During this time, in-person practices and workouts are permitted, but only with measures in place that are strictly enforced to reduce the spread of the virus. Some of those measures are listed below:
  • All athletes and coaches must be symptom-free to participate. Daily attendance and symptom checks must be conducted and documented.
  • Athletes must use their own equipment; no shared equipment unless it is properly disinfected between uses.
  • Athletes must maintain 6 feet of social distance from all individuals, including coaches and teammates.
  • Coaches must wear masks at all times, while athletes must wear a mask at times they are not engaged in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity.
  • Non-essential visitors, including parents, are not permitted at practice.

Updates regarding potential season start times, competition schedules, and state-wide modifications can be expected from the AIA at a later date.
