More than 250 YUHSD student-athletes receive no-cost sports physicals

Thanks to Dr. Ryan Zerr and his team from Yuma Regional Medical Center (YRMC), 264 student-athletes across Yuma Union High School District received no-cost sports physicals for the 2020-21 school year.

“Our series of district-wide on-site physicals was a huge success,” Kofa High School Athletic Director Dave King said. “It allowed us to make this important aspect of becoming a student-athlete accessible to all of our YUHSD students that needed it in a safe and healthy environment. It was also a great way to bolster our partnership with Dr. Zerr and his clinicians as we continue to collaborate in keeping our student-athletes healthy on and off the field.”

Dr. Zerr, who is the Program Director for Sports Medicine at YRMC, led the multi-day event that ranged from Gila Ridge to San Luis high schools. The final of the four events took place at Yuma High School on Thursday, Aug. 27.

Having an up-to-date physical exam is part of the clearance process for all high school athletes in Arizona. For more information about athletic clearance in YUHSD, please visit:

All fall sports returned to so-called “phase one” of practice on Monday, Aug. 24 with restrictions in place to maintain a safe environment and allow student-athletes to get acclimated to physical activity after months without any school-sanctioned activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
