YUHSD provides families choice in learning model

Yuma Union High School District families will have the opportunity to choose the learning model which best suits their needs as the first day of the 2020-21 school year nears.

Parents and guardians across district schools, including incoming freshmen, were sent information to access the YUHSD Choose Your Learning page on yumaunion.org to select between three separate learning models. All students will take part in distance learning, beginning Thursday, Aug. 6, and will do so, at least, until Arizona Governor Doug Ducey permits the return of in-person learning.

“Your decision will directly inform the planning and preparation for the reopening of your campus, including classroom setup, cafeteria arrangement, and more,” YUHSD Superintendent Gina Thompson wrote to families.

Choices for YUHSD families, which were introduced to the public at their July Governing Board meeting, include Hybrid Learning, Distance Learning through the Canvas Learning Management System, or enrolling in Yuma Online Distance Academy (YODA). All three options allow students to remain eligible for competition in Arizona Interscholastic Athletic events.

Here are some of the details from each learning model:

Hybrid Learning: Teachers provide in-person instruction two (2) days per week; Distance learning takes place three (3) days per week; Instruction in core subjects using YUHSD Cambridge Curriculum and electives.

Distance Learning (Canvas): Students participate remotely through the Canvas Learning Management System with YUHSD teachers; Students take part in the same classes they would in their regular class schedule; Instruction in core subjects using YUHSD Cambridge Curriculum and electives.

Yuma Online Distance Academy (YODA): Students must enroll in Yuma Online Distance Academy; Students participate remotely through virtual instruction with YODA instructors; Instruction in core subjects and some electives; YUHSD Curriculum

Families with questions about learning models or the start of the 2020-21 school year are encouraged to visit yumaunion.org or reach out to their respective schools via phone or email.
