YUHSD schools to light up fields in honor of Class of 2020

YHS Doan Field at sunset As one way of honoring the Class of 2020, Yuma Union High School District schools will be turning on the lights of their respective football/soccer fields at 8:20 p.m. (military time 2020) for 20 minutes each Wednesday, beginning April 15.

“The idea was brought to our attention by a staff member at Yuma High,” YUHSD Associate Superintendent Tim Brienza said. “All of our athletic directors agreed unanimously that it was just one of many unique ways we can pay tribute to the Class of 2020 during this unprecedented time. Those students, and student-athletes, are missing out on a great deal of things they spent their entire school careers working towards, so the district is doing anything we can to honor them.”

The movement to light up athletic fields, which will continue through Wednesday, May 20, 2020, has been ongoing across the United States as a symbol of hope and reassurance. YUHSD families are encouraged to turn on their porch lights on Wednesday nights from 8:20-8:40 as well.

Due to the ongoing global health crisis around COVID-19 all Arizona schools have canceled class for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year. The cancelation includes all events and activities, including spring athletics.
