Three YUHSD schools qualify for Academic Decathlon state competition
Three Yuma Union High School District schools finished in the top 10 of Saturday’s Academic Decathlon Region 3 competition to advance to the Arizona finals.
Cibola High School, with a team score of 36,308.3, placed second, while Gila Ridge (31,626.9) and Yuma High (29,954.2) finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Canyon Del Oro High School, which is currently ranked No. 1 in the state, won the region. Kofa and San Luis also competed in the event.
Overall, YUHSD schools captured 22 medals and four trophies, including Cibola finishing third in the Super Quiz event. Canyon Del Oro won the quiz, while Marana High School placed second.
“The Academic Decathlon teams worked extremely hard and that work has paid off as they qualified for the State Tournament,” YHS Academic Decathlon advisor Travis Gauthier said.
The state event will take place on Mar. 6-7, 2020 at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona. Last year, Cibola became the first YUHSD school in more than a decade to finish in the top 10 at state.
