YUHSD schools host FAFSA nights as application period opens
With the window for the 2020-21 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opening across the nation on Tuesday, Oct. 1, Yuma Union High School District schools have prioritized getting the application submitted.
Senior students can begin filling out the application online at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa, while juniors and underclassmen can process a “practice” application to help them understand what types of aid may be available in the future as well as get a Federal Student Aid identification number to help speed up the application process once they reach their final year of high school.
“We would like to get to 100 percent,” YUHSD Associate Superintendent Lisa Anderson said. “It’s something that every student should complete because you never know what kind of aid is out there for your postsecondary educational goals, including potential scholarships and grants. The brief amount of time it takes to fill it out now, could wind up saving a student time and money down the road. The FAFSA can also serve as a way to open doors for students who may have ambition to go to college, but are worried that it’s not affordable.”
YUHSD schools assist students and parents with the application process by offering the availability of computers and internet access in their respective counseling departments, having counselors available to answer questions, and hosting so-called FAFSA nights throughout the school year.
“It’s fairly easy to fill out if you have the right information, but there may be some specific situations that arise where families have questions. That’s why we’ll have counselors and experts there to assist,” Cibola High School Counselor Kevin Swearingin said.
