Cibola, Gila Ridge and Kofa students honored at nursing program graduation

For the first time in Yuma Union High School District history, more than two dozen future nurses from Career & Technical Education programs at Gila Ridge, Kofa and Cibola were honored with a joint graduation ceremony. Cibola nursing students

The group, which was presented with certificates for passing the state Certified Nursing Assistant exam as well as the two-year CTE program, took part in a ceremony at the YUHSD board room on Wednesday, May 22, 2019 in front of friends and family.

“I feel like they’ve prepared us well,” said Gila Ridge student Elizabeth Lopez, who will attend Arizona State University next year as a nursing student and serves as a HOSA state officer. “Each and every one of us got into this program for a reason. We are all students who are good, we are qualified, and we are students who will do whatever it takes to get it right. We passed [the exam] for a reason.”

Students were required to complete 40 hours of clinicals and at least 80 hours of laboratory and class time. In the program they learned hands-on skills as well as completed a comprehensive knowledge section of the program during the first year. Most of the clinical hours are spent at local nursing homes, working with elderly patients.

“To me, it’s an accomplishment knowing that they have completed the foundation and the beginning of nursing,” Kofa nursing instructor Elizabeth Lara said. “From there they will move forward to become nurses, physicians, physical therapists. This is just the beginning.”
