YUHSD to send 20 students to Washington as part of Close Up Program

Twenty Yuma Union High School District students were selected to attend the Close Up Program for New Americans in Washington, D.C. this June.

Close Up’s High School Program is designed to give students and educators an inside look at their democracy in action. Using the nation’s capital as a living classroom, participants get a “close up” view of government - interacting with the people, processes, and places that make this federal city so unique. There is also an exciting theatre performance.

According to the YUHSD Migrant Program Coordinator Juan Castillo, each day is filled with countless learning opportunities as the one-of-a-kind program takes students to Washington’s famous monuments and memorials. They will get a front row seat to see democracy in action in the halls of Congress, as well as in meetings with Washington insiders and media. It is all designed to help students make a personal connection to their role as a citizen and the issues that churn debate in Washington, D.C. They will visit Capitol Hill and meet with their representatives in Congress for a question and answer session. At the end of the program there was a banquet and dance.

Some additional highlights of the trip will include a visit to the National Air and Space Museum, a walking workshop of Capitol Hill, and an afternoon at Arlington Cemetery and the National Archives. At the end of each day students will be asked to reflect on their experience to reinforce learning.

Students were selected based on mobility and eligibility in the migrant program, the student’s essays, reference letters, extra-curricular activities, community service and academic standing.
