Kofa JROTC cadet named finalist for AIA Champion Award

Kofa High School Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps cadet Aileen Macias was named a finalist for an Arizona Interscholastic Association Champion Award.

She will be honored at the annual AIA Champions Awards Luncheon on Friday, May 17, 2019 at noon at State Farm Stadium. Aileen Macias

Macias has been a part of JROTC for the past three years, including two years on the rifle team. She participated in the Arizona Marksmanship state competition and MCJROTC regionals. She also throws shotput for the track and field team.

According to AIA guidelines, the graduating senior must have no less than a 3.75 GPA, must have participated in an AIA activity in the state of Arizona for at least two years, and have a record of good citizenship. The student must be recognized for character and excellence, academic accomplishments, high levels of integrity and veracity, and has been benefited from participation in HS interscholastic athletic/activity programs.

“The MCJROTC program is continuing to have a great year in representing Kofa,” Maj. Todd Birney said. “It’s all due to the support we receive from the district and school administration.”

Kofa’s JROTC program attended nationals in April and were recognized as one of the best 16 programs in the nation. They are the only such program in Yuma County high schools and operate through YUHSD’s Career & Technical Education program.
