Yuma High and Vista Alternative closed on March 12

Vista Alternative High School and Yuma High School will not hold classes on Tuesday, March 12, 2019 due to a professional development workshop for all teachers to be held on that day.

Classes at YHS and VAHS will resume on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 as regularly scheduled.

The workshop is part of Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) Pathways training and is entitled “9 Things Culturally Relevant Educators Do” as presented by Patrick Briggs.

“This training provides an opportunity for teachers on both campuses to continue their professional growth as educators,” Yuma Union High School District Director of Ready Now Yuma Eric Brooks said. “Patrick Briggs’ style of lighthearted comedic anecdotes and real-time instructional strategies makes him a brilliant model for teacher in their everyday classrooms.”

According to AVID’s website, Briggs is a thought-provoking and motivational speaker. He will encourage educators to examine their mindsets and practices as they consider if “all means all” when educating students. His high-energy presentations will move listeners to positive action, both in and out of the classroom.
