At the conclusion of the 2019 Arizona Interscholastic Association’s annual state championship wrestling tournament in Prescott, Arizona, three student-athletes from Yuma Union High School District emerged as individual state champions and three schools finished in the top 10 of their respective division’s team scores.

Yuma High School’s Jacob Sanchez was crowned the state’s best wrestler in the 182 lb. weight class, while Jayden Dobson grappled his way to the 195 lb. championship. The Criminals, defending their 2018 state team championship in Division 3, finished second with an overall score of 141.5, 44 points behind Walden Grove High.

In the girls division, Kofa High School’s Carolina Moreno became the first-ever YUHSD student to capture a female wrestling title, when she defeated Yaniva Carrillo from Cesar Chavez High in the 130 lb. weight class.

Cibola High School, which had two state champions a year ago, finished sixth overall in Division 1, while Kofa placed 10th. San Luis High School and Gila Ridge High School also took part in the state tournament. The Sidewinders finished 29th in Division 1, while Gila Ridge was 40th in Division 3.
