Multiple YUHSD students selected for West Region Honor Band

Five students from Yuma Union High School District were selected this week as members of the West Region Honor Band. The ensemble, made up of some of the best high-school age musicians in the state, will take part in two performances at Skyline High School in Mesa, Arizona on Feb. 15-16, 2019.

To be selected for a spot in honor band, students compete in a blind audition for a panel of five judges that includes the greater Phoenix and surrounding areas.

“They are asked to play two scales plus their chromatic scale,” Yuma High School band director Michael Harig said. “Part two of the audition is playing three pre-selected Etudes from the district and sight reading.”

The top scoring students qualify for the Region Band Clinic and concert. Students who make the top few chairs in their respective section, then qualify to audition for All-State Band.

"This opportunity is a culmination of sacrifices and hard work,” Cibola High School band director Amanda Dallabetta said. “Sacrifices, because these students chose to practice over and over again, and the work invested into being a better musician is challenging."
