GRHS track star signs Letter of Intent to Grand Canyon University

Gila Ridge High School senior Mia Corners signed a letter of intent on Wednesday, Jan. 9, 2019 to run track at Grand Canyon University. Corners has had an illustrious career for the Hawks, not only on the track but also on the soccer field.

“I am very excited and blessed to have the opportunity to continue my track and field career at Grand Canyon University,” said Corners. “The coaching staff, campus and entire school made me feel at home and I knew this was the right place for me.”

Grand Canyon University is a Division I program and a member of the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). The Antelopes are coached by Tom Flood who will be in his seventh season with the program. Corners signs her letter of intent with coach Briar Ploude looking on.

“Mia is a one-of-a-kind athlete who has been a leader on the track and in our program since the day she walked on campus,” said Briar Ploude, the Gila Ridge Track and Field coach. “Her leadership, work ethic, and positive attitude will be a few of the many things we will miss, but we couldn’t be happier for her to receive this opportunity.”

During her three seasons with the Hawks, Corners has amassed many superlatives, but it was Corner’s junior season which saw her have the most success at the Division II State Championships. She placed second in the long jump, second in the triple jump, fifth in the 100 meters, and sixth in the 200 meters. During her sophomore and junior seasons, she swept all four events at the YUHSD District Track meet, winning the 100-meter, 200-meter, 400 meter and triple jump competitions.

“I am very thankful to Gila Ridge and Coach Ploude as well as my teammates over the past four years who have all played a role in helping me achieve my dream,” Corners said. “I am excited to begin the next stage of my career at GCU next fall.”
