Vista Alternative holds 2018 Winter Graduation
As part of the Yuma Union High School District’s continuance of education, there was a celebration of graduation for Vista Alternative High School seniors on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2018 at Snider Auditorium.
Some of the students were ahead of their course work for credits that they were able to graduate early, which is exactly what Lesley Barajas Figueroa has done. By choosing Vista Alternative and using the school’s accelerated term system, Figueroa has graduated a semester early and this also allowed her to work on college courses.
This was Principal Brett Surguine’s first graduation with the Lobos and he was very excited to share this moment with them. “I’m very proud to see the students find ways to unlock their potential and find a system that helps them to find other paths to education, the work force, or military that we can offer for them at our campus,” Surguine said.
School counselor Soledad Rodriguez helps students plan schedules and their future while at Vista Alternative. “Meeting with students, I always tell them, what they do during high school years is a practice, like a rehearsal, where they will keep their bad or good habits to use on their future adulthood life,” Rodriguez said.
She often reminds them of Nora Ephron’s quote: “Your education is a dress rehearsal for a life that is yours to lead.”
With this early December graduation, Vista Alternative was able to share the success and congratulate their 23 students with a great milestone: a high school diploma.
