Yuma High School’s Criminal mascot roaming the sidelines of sporting events and activities will have a new nickname. 

Starting in the 2023-24 school year, the mascot will be known as “Curt the Crim,” after longtime teacher and coach Curt Weber. The school announced the new name at its annual spring pep rally on Friday. 

“It’s just good to reflect back,” Weber said. “It's been a good ride and I’ve always tried to be involved. The Criminal tradition in this town is unbelievable…it’s just a pleasure to be part of it.” 

Weber has been a part of Yuma Union High School District for 47 years, including 33 at Yuma High School. Over his career he has taught government, history, economics and coached baseball, football, track, and basketball. He also worked at Kofa High School.

The mascot’s name change was voted on unanimously by the YHS Student Council. When they learned Weber was going to retire, they wanted to honor him in a way that would make his legacy last at YHS. 

“Mr. Weber is the man, the myth, the legend,” said Student Council Advisor Betsy Jacobson. “It was only fitting for that mascot to be ‘Curt the Crim.’”

The honor was a surprise for Weber, who was joined by friends and family at center court of Yuma High’s Palace Gym. Weber will be retiring from his teaching career this spring, and will be honored again in the coming weeks at YUHSD’s annual retirement and recognition ceremony for staff.
