YUHSD staff takes part in Professional Development Day
Yuma Union High School District educators took part in a district-wide professional development day on Monday, September 26, 2022 at Kofa High School centered on personalized learning, standards-based grading, and the Canvas Learning Management System.
The day was broken into multiple breakout session opportunities that were curated and presented by a range of YUHSD staff, including teachers, counselors, social workers and instructional leaders. In all, 25 breakout opportunities were available for staff to choose from. Each attendee also watched a presentation from keynote speaker Cory Steiner, who serves as Superintendent of Northern Cass School District in North Dakota and is an expert in the area of standards-based grading and personalized learning.
“He talked about the successes and challenges that his district had in relation to standards-based grading and personalized learning at every level,” YUHSD Director of Educational Technology and Learning Management Bibi Frazine said. “It gets you excited to think about what the possibilities are when the educators go back in the classroom, what’s going to happen with the knowledge they gained today, and how are they going to apply it.”
Modules ranged from Canvas usage to AVID strategies, and while teachers were asked to select sessions they wanted to attend in person, all sessions will be available via recording for later access.
“We are learning a lot about professional competency-based learning,” Gila Ridge High School Physical Education teacher Cooper Cox said. “I think it could be a good tool for us to start incorporating more venues for student success and student learning. I think we can reach more students and get them more engaged and involved.”
In addition to the teaching and learning event at Kofa, YUHSD Classified staff members attended a professional development session regarding active shooter scenarios at Yuma High School. The session was conducted by Yuma Police Department in coordination with YUHSD School Resource Officers.
