Cibola Junior Zarrin Askari to compete in International Science and Engineer Fair in May
Cibola Junior Zarrin Askari will represent the state of Arizona at this year’s virtual Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair on May 3-6th, 2021. Her winning project is called “Supplementation of Phenylalanine on Snail Speed."
“Besides the common challenges that come with any research project, it has been even more difficult this year due to the pandemic,” states Zarrin. “Learning from home, I had little confidence that I could produce any meaningful research; fortunately, my teacher Ms. Garcia would not let me give up so easily. I hope that my accomplishments can inspire other students to reach beyond the expectations- the harder something is the more substantial the reward. Doubt is our greatest weakness, but anything can be achieved once we acknowledge our full potential.”
In regional events, Zarrin placed “Best in Show” for the Senior Division, and 1st place in the Zoology category.
“I have always believed that hard work pays off,” states Patricia Garcia, Science Department Instructional Leader. “During the pandemic teachers around the world worked harder than ever, meanwhile trying to calm the fears of their own families. Keeping routines is one of the most important things for young minds, and because of that we decided to continue with science research projects even in the middle of a pandemic. It was extremely challenging as we were faced with lack of resources in our student homes, and most days only having a screen between us as support. In the end it has been one of my proudest moments as an educator to watch students like Zarrin accomplish their greatest work yet. She and her classmates have been an inspiration to all of us.”
According to the ISEF Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair website, students from around the world will compete in the virtual Regeneron ISEF 2021. Judging will take place from May 3-6, 2021 via video conferencing. Official Regeneron ISEF events will take place May 16-21, featuring distinguished panels, the Finalist Exhibit Hall, a Career Hall, the ISEF College Fair and a STEM Experiential Hall.
Cibola is cheering for you Zarrin...GO FOR THE GOLD MIGHTY RAIDER!
