Cibola High School English teacher Jessica Curry has been nominated for the Arizona Rural Schools Association Teacher of the Year.

Curry was selected as the Yuma County ARSA Teacher of the Year for the 2018-2019 school year and has moved on to the ARSA State Teacher of the Year, which will be announced in Flagstaff, Arizona on Sept. 13, 2019.

“Mrs. Curry possesses all the traits an administrator wants in a teacher,” CHS Principal Derek Bosch said. “She is extremely dedicated to her students, which is apparent upon entering her classroom. I am very proud and fortunate to have Mrs. Curry as a member of our teaching staff at Cibola High School.”

Following Curry's selection as Yuma County ARSA Teacher of the Year 2018-2019, she took part in a finalist interview on Aug. 9, 2019 in Phoenix. The Arizona Teacher of the Year award winner receives a check for $1,000 as well as an all-expense paid trip to the annual National Rural Education Association Convention.

“I feel humbled to even be nominated and can only say that this nomination is truly for all of the teachers that continue to teach and support me every day,” Curry said.

The ARSA award has been around since 1994 with winners hailing from numerous parts of the state. However, the last winner from Yuma County was Jodi Lorenz from Antelope High School in Wellton in 1996. No Yuma Union High School District teacher has ever won the award.

Last year, Curry was named a finalist for the Education Foundation Yuma County’s High School Teacher of the Year Award along with Kofa High School’s Christie Nicholson and Yuma High School’s Rocio Ruiz. Nicholson was ultimately named the winner.
