Cibola earns YUHSD’s first top 10 finish at AcaDec state in more than a decade

Cibola High School’s Academic Decathlon team competed at the Arizona Academic Decathlon Association state championship Mar. 8-9, 2019 at Hamilton High School in Chandler, Arizona, taking home Yuma Union High School District’s first top 10 finish at state in more than a decade.

Cibola’s squad placed 10th out of 40 teams with a score of 38,121.3 points. Cibola was ranked 18th going into competition, and improved by 3,339.7 points from Region 3 competition in February. Nathan Jarvis received the silver medal in Honors Social Science with a score of 960 out of 1,000 points.

"Our team was shocked and excited when they announced our 10th place finish,” CHS Academic Decathlon teacher Dan Zarbock said. “It took a few seconds to register that we had finally cracked the top ten.”

It is the first time since 2005 that a YUHSD school has earned a top 10 finish at state. Cibola was fifth in 2005, while Yuma High finished eighth in 2003 and 2004.

In addition to Cibola, Yuma and Gila Ridge high schools competed with Yuma winning a medal in the interview category. Hamilton High School finished in first place, snapping a five-year winning streak for Canyon Del Oro High School.
