Cibola Mock Trial sends team to state finals

Four Cibola High School Mock Trial teams competed in the Mock Trial Regional Competition at the Yuma County Courthouse on Mar. 2, 2019.

After intense argumentation, two Cibola teams competed against each other in the championship round, judged by Arizona Supreme Court Justice Andrew Gould.

The team captained by Alena Wilson and Jesus Estrada were victorious and qualified for the State competition to be held at Sandra Day O'Connor Courthouse in Phoenix on Saturday, Mar. 23. This is Cibola’s second consecutive year qualifying for the state competition.  Mock trial first place team outside

“I am proud of the kids in this program,” Cibola Mock Trial teacher Joshua Guidote said. “These Mock Trial students put months of blood, sweat and tears into this competition and it showed in court. Having four teams compete and numerous students from class who were not competing show up at court to prepare for the class and tournament next year was nothing short of amazing. The numbers and success of this program shows the future is bright. I cannot put into words how impressive this group of kids is to work with."

The regional event was a successful day for Cibola teams, who finished first, second, fourth and fifth in competition and earned six of the eight spots on the Regional All-Star Squad. The three artists who competed in the sketch artist competition are awaiting the result of their courtroom sketch submissions.

According to Guidote, Cibola’s mock trial team consists of more members than any other in the state.
