YUHSD schools put together big wins at Academic Decathlon Regionals

Students from four Yuma Union High School District schools won medals at the Academic Decathlon Region III Competition in Tucson, Arizona on Feb. 1-2, 2019.

In total, 21 students from Cibola, Gila Ridge, Kofa and Yuma high schools won medals, while Kofa and Gila Ridge also took home a trophy.

“For the Yuma schools overall, this is really cool,” Cibola Academic Decathlon Adviser Dan Zarbock said. “It was just awesome to hear so many different schools from YUHSD get called during the awards ceremony.”

Winners at the event qualify for the State Competition on March 8-9, 2019 at Hamilton High School in Chandler. Cibola, Gila Ridge and Yuma also qualified as teams for state.

The United States Academic Decathlon’s curriculum is an interdisciplinary curriculum in which a selected theme is integrated across six different subject areas: art, economics, literature, music, science, and social science. Students also study mathematics and participate in essay-writing, speech and interview events. The 2018-19 Curriculum Theme is “The 1960s; A Transformational Decade.”
