Cibola Teacher Jonica Flores wins "One Class at a Time" award

Cibola High School teacher Jonica Flores the October "One Class at a Time" award from KECY Fox 9, sponsored by Children's Dental Pediatric Specialist - Dr. John Kempton.

"I am honored to receive the One Class at a Time award on behalf of my students," Flores said.  "I am very grateful to Fox 9 News for their recognition and to Dr. Kempton with Children's Dental for his generosity. Receiving this money will allow my students the opportunity to learn about horticulture while engaging their natural curiosity and wonder through lessons that are hands-on and meaningful."

“One Class at a Time” is a program to help fulfill needs of local schools in Yuma County. The campaign awards $500 every month identifying and funding applications for classroom projects throughout Yuma County schools.

"With this award we plan on purchasing a Garden Tower and additional gardening implements such as seeds, trowels, and planters,” Flores added. “The Garden Tower is a rotating composter that will allow us to grow 50 plants in only 4 square feet. The Garden Tower rotates and is designed to grow items vertically above ground compared to a traditional garden. This will allow students with disabilities the opportunity to participate whereas they normally might not be able to. We will be growing organic vegetables and herbs to use when we create healthy meals. I have no doubt that receiving these funds will have a positive impact on my students’ self-esteem. I am looking forward to sharing our future success with this project with everyone."

Flores is the second Cibola teacher to win the award this year and third teacher from YUHSD to win in it since 2017-18. Special Education teacher Tayde Lund was the winner for the month of August.
