YUHSD announces finalists for Somerton High School mascot

The mascot choice for Somerton High School is down to two finalists: the Scorpions or the Toros.

After surveying more than 3,000 respondents, including Somerton-area middle school, a field of five choices was narrowed down to two. Yuma Union High School District released an initial survey in December soliciting responses for school colors and mascot suggestions. After 69.9% of the respondents selected copper and navy blue as the new school’s official colors, the field of more than 140 suggested names was pared to five semifinalists.

A second survey was released in January asking for the community to choose among the Scorpions, Toros, Sabercats, Lions, and Cyclones. Out of 2,387 community responses, 33.3 percent chose Scorpions, while 28.6 percent chose Toros. Additionally, YUHSD surveyed Somerton Middle School students separately. The school survey elicited 629 responses with 37.5 percent choosing Scorpions compared to 22.6 percent choosing Toros.

The final survey, which opened Monday, February 7, will give voters one final opportunity to choose the school’s mascot. The survey can be accessed here (https://bit.ly/TorosOrScorpions), by visiting the YUHSD Facebook page or official website.

Following the close of voting on Sunday, February 13, the district expects to announce the official name on Tuesday, March 1. There will be an opportunity to submit artwork for the school logo beginning at that time through Friday, March 18. Those submissions will be reviewed by a select committee with the final rendering announced sometime in April.
