Bazua named First-Team All-State, Region Player of the Year to lead San Luis baseball awards
San Luis High School’s Christopher Bazua has been named First-Team All-State by the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association.
It’s the second of two major awards for the San Luis right-hander, who was also the Arizona Interscholastic Association 6A Desert Southwest Regional Player of the Year for the 2019 baseball season.
Bazua, who played multiple positions and served as the Sidewinders’ ace, was in his second season as a full-time varsity starter for San Luis. He finished his senior season as the state’s 6A Conference leader in Earned Run Average (0.45), wins (9) and strikeouts (77).
“He leads in the trifecta in statistics in the 6A Conference, but what Christopher does on the mound doesn’t come close as to what type of person he is,” San Luis baseball coach Cesar Castillo said. “His humble and caring ways will carry him far in life. Going into the season we had seven players who never played varsity baseball, and being able to get us back into the state playoffs is a plus.”
Senior Gerardo Hernandez, who batted a career-high .435 in 19 games, was named Second-Team All-State by AZBCA.
The Sidewinders (15-5) advanced to the 6A state playoffs, winning a play-in game, 5-3, on the road against Pinnacle, before losing in round one to Corona del Sol. It is the seventh consecutive season San Luis has made the postseason tournament, including finishing as the state runner up in 2016 and entering the playoffs as a No. 4 seed in 2018, and 11th time in 14 years. They have also finished at least 10 games above .500 for the past six seasons, all under Castillo.
In addition to Bazua’s player of the year honor, seven San Luis players nabbed first-team All-Region spots: sophomores Ohan Zabalza and Martin Miranda, juniors Gabriel Valenzuela and Manuel Gutierrez, and seniors Bazua, Hernandez, and Alexis Casteneda.
Hernandez and Bazua have signed letters of intent to play at Arizona Western College next season, while Castaneda and Emiliano Celaya will play at Imperial Valley College. Overall, ten San Luis student-athletes have played college baseball since 2016, including Gabriel Ponce (University of San Diego), Ramon Miranda, Arturo Gil, and Andres Gastelum (AWC), Jesus Pulido (Yavapai College), and Hernan Yanez (Cochise College).
