A dozen Yuma High School wrestlers qualify for state tournament

The Yuma High School wrestling team has had another successful season. Head Coach Jeff Welsing led the team to finish the year with a 46-2 record in dual meets and the team won tournaments at Red Mountain, Ironwood, and Joseph City high schools.

To cap off the season, a dozen of the Yuma’s 14 varsity wrestlers made it to the Division III Wrestling Tournament, which takes place Feb. 8-10 at Prescott Valley Events Center in Prescott, Arizona. According to the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) website, each division will award both a team champion and a runner-up trophy. Individual medals will be awarded for places 1-6 in all 14 weight classes.

Last week, the team won the Section III tournament for the third year in a row, boasting six section champions.

Here are Yuma High’s sectional champions: 113: Jonathan Ruiz; 126: Jose Bogarin: 132: Leo Velazquez; 152: Aidan Irwin; 170: Jacob Sanchez; and 285: Oscar Vega. An additional six wrestlers qualified for State: 106: Mario Bugarin; 145: Erick Cervantes; 160: Servando Campos; 182: Carlos Nunez; 195: Jayden Dobson; and 260: Shane Garcia.
