AWC and Yuma High partner for college astronomy course on YHS campus

Yuma High School and Arizona Western College have added an Astronomy class to the college curriculum that is being offered on the Yuma High School campus.

The class meets twice per week, and is a four-credit class that would be accepted at all three major universities in Arizona.

“This class focuses on the Solar System, and more specifically the planets, and the Sun,” Astronomy professor Doug Thompson said. “We make comparisons between the Earth, and the other planets.”

Any college bound student is welcome to take this class. There are no prerequisites. As long as the student is registered with AWC, and meet their requirements they are able to take this college course being given at Yuma High School.

“A disciplined student can take advantage of this opportunity. This is a college course so the expectation is that the student will progress in the self-motivated area.” Thompson added.

The astronomy class is part of a larger partnership with YHS and AWC. Thus far, the high school also offers college courses in English and Math with others to be added.
