YHS Choir and Drama attend ‘The Music Man’

The Yuma High School Choir and Drama clubs attended “The Music Man” at the Herberger Theatre in Phoenix, Arizona on Jan. 22, 2019. The production was put on by the Arizona Theatre Company, which has been performing in Arizona since 1967. YHS choir boards bus

The tickets were purchased through a grant secured by the Arizona Theatre Company. This allowed the students at YHS to visit the theatre, view a professional production, and then stay after for what is called a “talk back.” This is when select audience members ask questions to the performers after the show.

“This production of The Music Man is the largest production in Arizona Theatre Company's history with a cast of 40 actors, dancers and singers and a full pit orchestra,” YHS Choir Director Laura Surguine said.

The production also has a link to Yuma. Set designer Scott Pask is a native Yuman who has excelled in the theater industry and won a Tony Award in set design. Not only was this a chance for a Yuman to give back, but to also show the students that there is opportunities in his industry beyond merely acting.

“The choir at Yuma High will be performing a piece from The Music Man in our spring concert, ‘Lida Rose,’ written for barbershop quartet,” Surguine added.
