YHS pre-season football scrimmage.

Criminal Nation, it’s about that time of year again. The time of year when the lights on Doan Field light up Friday nights on the North End. The nights where one can hear the band playing the fight song throughout the avenues surrounding Yuma High School. The nights when the police car gets chased by a hoard of Criminals while the old prison siren wails. Criminal Nation, football season is all but two weeks away.

The Criminals look to hone in on their in game experiences by hosting the Yuma Catholic Shamrocks in their annual pre-season scrimmage Friday, Aug. 10 at 7 p.m. Head Coach Curt Weber enters his ninth season as the head coach at Yuma High and 43rd as part of Yuma Union High School District.

He seems optimistic about the 2018 season. When asked about the preseason scrimmage, Weber said: “What I am looking for in this scrimmage is guys who want to go, and get out there; to see who wants to block, tackle, and be aggressive. I want to see who really wants to play.” Coach Weber is excited to have a line he can brag about led by seniors Shane Garcia, and Carlos Nunez. Another key player to watch is Tyler Hamilton, stepping into his senior year as the teams go-to wide receiver.

Criminal football is looking to bounce back after a strong start last year. The home opener against the Calexico Bulldogs is Aug. 24, and the Criminals look to use a Week 1 bye to strengthen their offense and defense.

“With an extra week, we have two weeks where we can really make some progress now, and get ready for Calexico,” Weber said.

Last year the Criminals in Week 3, extended their record to 2-0 by beating the Calexico Bulldogs by a score of 14-12.
