Jose Bugarin signs to wrestle at Northwest Tech

Yuma High School senior Jose Bugarin signed a letter of intent Wednesday, June 6, to wrestle at Northwest Technical College in Goodland, Kansas next season.

Bugarin, who helped lead the Criminals to the Division III state championship, wrestled in the 126 lb. weight class. He won 61 matches during the 2017-18 season.

“Jose was a 4-year wrestler within the program,” YHS wrestling coach Jeff Welsing said. “He started on JV for two years but, made the commitment to get better and was a state qualifier as a junior. He refocused his goals and placed fourth for us this season. Jose is a great example of how hard work and dedication pays off in the end.”

Yuma High wrestling won its first state wrestling championship in more than 50 years, edging Walden Grove High School by 0.5 points in the team total. Bugarin was one of eight wrestlers from Yuma High to earn at least sixth place at state. His brother, Mario, who finished third in the 113 lb. weight class at state, will be a sophomore at Yuma High next fall.

“I am excited for this next journey, and part of my life, and to wrestle in college,” Bugarin said during a small signing ceremony at Yuma High.

Northwest Technical College had nine wrestlers out of 10 weight classes qualify for the National Junior College Athletic Association’s national tournament in February. They finished 10th in team points out of 46 schools at the tournament.
