SLHS named ‘Most Innovative Player’ for month of December by state of Arizona

The Arizona Commission for Postsecondary Education and the Governor’s Office of Education awarded the December 2019 “Most Innovative Player” recognition to San Luis High School.

This award is a state recognition for going “above and beyond” to increase the school’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) completion rate and ensure more Arizona students are equipped to pursue postsecondary success.

In the most recent report from College Goal Arizona, San Luis has a 44 percent FAFSA completion rate, which is second among large enrollment schools in the state of Arizona. SLHS Counseling Director Cesar Castillo anticipates the number increasing to 47 percent by next week.

SLHS will receive a certificate of recognition signed by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and a FAFSA celebration box, which includes a $150 Visa gift card as well as other prizes and giveaways to promote FAFSA completion to students. Past winners have used the gift card for a FAFSA pizza party, FAFSA and donuts event, T-shirts, celebratory ice cream social, and more. Additionally, SLHS will be featured in the December 2019 AZ FAF$A Challenge Newsletter

“With your continued efforts, we look forward to watching your school’s FAFSA completion rate grow throughout the school year,” FAFSA Challenge Project Manager Julie Sainz said in a letter to SLHS Principal Lucky Arvizo. “Thank you to San Luis High School for an amazing job - Keep up the great work!”

To help increase their completion rate, San Luis, among other things, has hosted FAFSA nights, put out various social media campaigns via the counseling department’s official Facebook page, posted signage around campus, and boosted the overall level of conversations around college-going culture and FAFSA on campus.
