SLHS student voted as 2023 Close Up President

San Luis High School senior Yaretzy Mariela Martinez Reyes was votedClose up President Yaretzy Martinez. as the 2023 Close Up President, receiving 84 percent of student votes, on June 14, 2023 at the Close Up Leadership Program in Washington, D.C. 

It is the first time a Yuma Union High School District student has been elected to this national office. 

One-hundred forty students from various states participated in this program. Overall, Close Up programs are held throughout the United States at different times of the year. YUHSD participates each year from June 11-16.

“As the Migrant Education Program (MEP) Coordinator, I was very fortunate to spend a week with Yaretzy at the Close Up Leadership Program,” MEP Coordinator Maria Cruz said. “She is an amazing student full of light and compassion.”

During this six-day/five-night program, students tour our nation’s capital and have the chance to discuss current issues with experts, policymakers, and member of Congress, explore Capitol Hill and witness a live congressional committee hearing to see how policy is crafted, and much more.
