KHS JROTC program earns big win at State Rifle Competition

KHS JROTC Rifle team The Kofa High School Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) Rifle team built on their previous success by claiming first place of the 15 teams at the Arizona JROTC Sate Rifle Meet on Jan. 11 at the Ben Avery Shooting Facility in Phoenix.

Kofa Team 1 (Nickolas Wissler, Daphne Rivera, Keilem Vazquez, and Casey Clark) won first place out of 15 teams, while Cadet Wissler also received Top Shooter overall out of 55 shooters, winning first in prone and kneeling positions. Kofa team 2 (Galindo, Garcia, Corian Castillo, and Brayden Waldron) finished sixth and in top half out of 55 shooters.

“This is the first time the Kofa MCJROTC Rifle Team has won the AZ State JROTC Rifle Meet,” said Maj Todd Birney, Kofa’s JROTC Instructor. “They have set the bar for future rifle teams.”

This was the third major rifle event that the Kofa team has earned victories in over the past two months. In November, they won took home trophies in two competitions, including Wissler and Galindo finishing second and fourth overall in the Ray Pickett Invitational at Rio Rico High School.

The Kofa JROTC is nationally ranked, and was recently recognized as a Naval Honors Program, which, among other advantages, allows for Maj Birney or Sgt. Maj. Collen Laarman to nominate cadets for U.S. Military Service Academies.
