JROTC finds success at Raider Meet

Kofa High School’s Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) program placed first overall in the 8th annual SSG Jorge Armanda Padilla Raider Meet in Rio Rico, Arizona on Nov. 3, 2018.JROTC competing at Raider Challenge

The Raider Meet consists of eight events, ranging from a truck pull to an 8x400 relay race. Kofa sent eight cadets to the event, and placed first in two events, second in two events, and third in one event. With such high placements, Kofa’s program was awarded first place overall.

“This was a big deal for us because it was an AIA (Arizona Interscholastic Association) event and the first time we've won a Raider Challenge” Major Todd Birney, Kofa’s MCJROTC Instructor, said. 

The team consists of a mix of eight cadets from all grade levels at Kofa, including seniors Valeria Castillo and Elsie Serrano, juniors Nick Wissler, Richard Orozco and Adam Certain, sophomores Jose Lopez and Angel Lares, and freshman Jose Garcia.

Kofa has five sections of JROTC, which is part of Yuma Union High School District’s Career and Technical Education program. The JROTC program is led by Birney and Sergeant Major Colen Laarman.
