Keiley Sharp signs letter of intent with TCU

Kofa High School track and field star Keiley Sharp trusted that she’d “feel it” when it came time to make a decision about where to spend her years as a collegiate athlete.

After visits to multiple PAC-12 Conference schools and other prominent track programs around the nation, it was her last visit that made the most lasting impression.

“My last visit was to TCU,” Sharp said Thursday. “It was like right when I met Coach (Darryl) Anderson on the track. It was a done deal. My mom (Connie) always said, ‘You’re going to feel it within yourself if you know, if this is the place where you want to be.’”

Sharp, a senior, signed an official letter of intent to attend Texas Christian University on Thursday, Nov. 14, 2018 in a ceremony at Kofa’s Rillos Gym.

“I’ve dreamed about this my entire life,” Sharp said. “I am really excited. It’s a great opportunity for sure.”

Sharp is expected to participate in the javelin event, where she won a 6A Conference state title during her junior season and finished first in eight meets overall.

She also won the 2018 Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, New Mexico with a personal record throw of 150-8. She was also named to the 6A Conference Student Leadership Committee, named to the Yuma Sun/Rotary Track Athlete of the Year, and finished third in the state in the high jump.

“I’ve never coached another athlete like her where you almost have to ask her to leave the weight room or tell her she’s doing too much,” KHS track coach Ben Franz said. “And, so, it’s a different mindset that all of her coaches take into coaching her because she is so naturally motivated.

“[Keiley] is a natural athlete, but that alone doesn’t get you anywhere. The work ethic that she has, the support system from her family and just that drive and motivation, those intangibles that you can’t coach.”
