Distance runner Jaso signs with Chadron State College

Surrounded by a few dozen of his friends, teammates and coaches inside Kofa High School’s Rillos Gym Thursday afternoon, distance runner Michael Jaso signed his letter of intent to attend Chadron State College in Nebraska on a full-tuition scholarship.

“It means a lot to me,” Jaso said. “Since I’ve started running, I’ve been in love with the sport and collegiate running has been my goal since my sophomore year. Even just to have the chance to go to college is amazing and I’m super excited.”

Jaso, a senior, competes in the 3200m, 1600m, and 4x800m relay for the Kofa track team and also competed in cross country during the fall. He placed 15th in the AIA Division I State Championships in October.

He intends to do cross country in the fall, indoor track in the winter, and outdoor track in the spring at Chadron. The four-year college is located in the northern section of the Nebraska panhandle near the South Dakota border. They compete in Division II of the NCAA and had three national qualifiers in distance running since 2014.

Jaso said he plans to study human biology on his way to becoming a physical therapist.
