Cibola boys and girls basketball teams win tournament titles on same day

Cibola High School boys and girls basketball teams earned early-season tournament championships this weekend, with both victories coming within hours of one another.

The boys team took home the Southwest Rotary Classic with a 73-59 victory over Dobson High School, last year’s runner-up in the tournament. It is the first time Cibola has won the SWRC since the tournament’s inaugural year in 2000 and the first time a Yuma Union High School District school has won since Yuma High in 2008. Guard Jason Sandoval scored a game-high 17 points for the Raiders.

With the boys game wrapping up around 4 p.m. in Yuma, the girls were already celebrating their Brawley Tournament title about 70 miles away.

Led by sophomore Myna Johnson’s eight points, the Lady Raiders, upended Yuma Catholic, 34-27. Cibola held the Shamrocks to just 19 percent shooting, and got six points or more from four players in the win. The tournament title comes a week after the Lady Raiders went 3-1 at the Basha Thanksgiving Tournament in Chandler.

"The feeling of victory is one of the best feelings you could ever experience,” said Cibola forward Estefania Swearingin, who is the lone senior on the roster. “Winning with this team is an honor. We, as a team, are dedicated, motivated, and determined to be successful.”

The Cibola boys return to the court on Tuesday, Dec. 10 when they travel to Central (El Centro) High School. The girls host Gila Ridge on Thursday, Dec. 12.
