Kofa's JROTC chapter ends a successful year with Drill and PT team victories

Kofa High School’s Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) posted excellent results from the Golden Bear West Coast Drill Nationals in Torrance, California last month.

Kofa's JROTC took 43 Drill Cadets to include an Armed Regulation Team, Armed Exhibition Team, two Unarmed Regulation Drill teams and two Color Guards. Kofa joined 42 other schools from the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps JRTOC programs in the competition and took home a number of awards.

Cadet Captain Ruby Rubio, Platoon Commander for the Armed Exhibition Drill Team, was ranked fourth overall for her performance. And they had team success in the physical training obstacle course, which consists of a rope bridge crossing, knot tying relay, 1.5 mile run in full battle gear, obstacle course, and water survival course.

Sergeant Major Laarman, Kofa’s JROTC Instructor, stated: “[KHS Principal] Mr. [Mike] Sharp, Major Birney and I are very proud of these cadets this school year and their level of discipline, dedication, and pure determination to succeed, spending countless hours training before and after school for months to compete at the National Level.”

The Marine Corps JROTC program was implemented nationally in 1916. According to their official website, it has been viewed as a strong program that provides youth with much-needed skills in citizenship and leadership. Additionally, numerous studies have shown that students who participate in JROTC programs have better attendance, grades, and graduation rates relative to students who were in general academic programs.

Here are the results for all of Kofa’s JROTC participants at the Golden Bear West Coast Nationals:
