Slaughter named AZ Cardinals coach of the week

Jessica Slaughter and Johnnie NoriegaGila Ridge High School football coach Jessica Slaughter was selected as the Arizona Cardinals Coach of the Week.

The award comes after earning her first victory as a varsity head coach, when the Hawks defeated Yuma High, 41-7, on Friday, Oct. 8.

Slaughter is in her first year at the helm of the Hawks varsity team and her fourth season overall as a football coach at the school. A Gila Ridge alumni, Slaughter spent three years as the head coach of the freshman team and was defensive line coach of the varsity team in 2020 prior to becoming head coach.

 She is the first female head coach in AIA history to earn a win in the 4A-6A level.

“I am very proud of the boys and the work they put in to get the victory last week," Slaughter said. "They played as a team and focused on doing their jobs. It was a great first win for the season. I am honored to be named AZ Cardinals high school coach of the week."

For 27 years, Cardinals coach of the week has been selected by a local sports panel, which includes Cardinals defensive lineman Corey Peters. As part of the award, Gila Ridge will receive a $1,000 check on behalf of Cardinals Charities.

Slaughter will receive a certification for the award, signed by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill and head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
