    As winter break approaches, Yuma Union High School District is contacting families to share important information about the coming weeks and allow you to plan accordingly. 

    The first academic semester of the 2020-21 school year ends on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020. We will maintain our distance learning schedule with students learning on camera five (5) days per week. Report cards will be mailed home over the course of the following week. In the event that your child is failing or falling behind, there are numerous opportunities for them to redo-retake material. Please communicate with your child’s teacher(s) for specific information on how to proceed. 

    The second academic semester begins Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2021. All YUHSD schools will   continue with distance learning at that time. Your child can access his or her second semester schedule through StudentVUE, beginning Monday, Jan. 4, 2021. The district will continue to evaluate weekly COVID-19 metrics released by the Arizona Department of Health Services and will discuss our learning schedule at our next Governing Board meeting on Jan. 13, 2021. 

    For students enrolled in Career & Technical Education (CTE) courses, the goal is to master each standard and then advance to the next level in their CTE program. Once understanding is achieved, students can move forward to the next standard, and grades will be modified to support the evidence provided by the students. If a student failed a course in the first semester, CTE teachers will focus on improvement, seek answers to why the student is struggling, and how they can best support mastery of all CTE standards. Beginning in the second semester, CTE will provide additional evening tutoring sessions to assist students with current class work as well as redo and retake opportunities.

    For special education students, the YUHSD Student Services Department remains committed to supporting the learning of all students and ensuring equitable opportunities. Enabling students with disabilities to progress in meeting educational, social, and emotional learning needs continues to be the aim of the IEP and 504 teams. Given the rising concerns with the ongoing healthcare crisis, we will continue to provide the most appropriate educational services via distance learning when school resumes in January. On-site learning opportunities will continue to be available to students based on the IEP team decisions. We want to also assure you that all of our teachers will provide redo and retake opportunities to students wanting to improve their grades from the current semester. 

    We know that communication is important and we want to make sure our families receive all of the latest information. It is imperative that your child’s school has your most up-to-date email, phone number, and address. Verify this information using your ParentVUE account or by calling your child’s school.

    A medida que se acercan las vacaciones de invierno, el Distrito Escolar Yuma Union se está poniendo en comunicación con las familias para compartirles información importante sobre qué pasará en las próximas semanas permitiéndoles planificar de acuerdo a sus necesidades.

    El primer semestre académico del año escolar 2020-21 termina el viernes 18 de diciembre de 2020. Mantendremos nuestro programa de aprendizaje a distancia con los estudiantes aprendiendo frente a la cámara los cinco (5) días a la semana. Las boletas de calificaciones se enviarán por correo a casa durante el transcurso de la semana siguiente. En el caso de que su hijo/a este reprobando o se retrase, existen numerosas oportunidades para que pueda volver a hacer/rehacer el material. Comuníquese con los maestros de sus hijos para obtener información específica sobre cómo proceder.

    El segundo semestre académico comienza el miércoles 6 de enero de 2021.  Todas las escuelas del Distrito YUHS continuarán en ese momento con el aprendizaje a distancia. Sus hijos pueden acceder a sus horarios de clases del segundo semestre a través de StudentVUE, a partir del lunes 4 de enero de 2021.  El distrito continuará evaluando las cifras métricas del COVID-19 semanalmente publicadas por el Departamento de Servicios de Salud de Arizona y discutirá nuestro horario de aprendizaje en nuestra próxima reunión de la Junta de la mesa directiva el 13 de enero de 2021.

    Para los estudiantes inscritos en cursos de Educación Técnica y Profesional (CTE), el objetivo es dominar cada estándar y luego avanzar al siguiente nivel en su programa CTE. Una vez que se logra la comprensión, los estudiantes pueden avanzar al siguiente estándar y las calificaciones se modificarán para respaldar la evidencia proporcionada por los estudiantes. Si un estudiante reprueba un curso en el primer semestre, los maestros de CTE se enfocarán en mejorar, buscarán respuestas sobre por qué el estudiante tiene dificultades y cómo pueden apoyar mejor el dominio de todos los estándares de CTE. A partir del segundo semestre, CTE proporcionará sesiones de tutoría adicionales por las tardes para ayudar a los estudiantes con el trabajo de clase actual, así como oportunidades para rehacer y retomar tareas.

    Para los estudiantes de educación especial, el Departamento de Servicios Estudiantiles del Distrito de YUHS continúa comprometido a apoyar el aprendizaje de todos los estudiantes y asegurar oportunidades equitativas.     The Yuma Union High School District Governing Board during a special emergency meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 18 voted to approve Superintendent Gina Thompson’s recommendation that all YUHSD campuses return to full distance learning, beginning Monday, Nov. 23.

    The decision was made in the interest of student and staff health and safety due to the increasingly high number of COVID-19 metrics across Yuma County. The board along with YUHSD leadership will evaluate COVID-19 metrics in December and January to determine if and when it is appropriate to move into a different offering for instruction.

    Students will be on camera for distance learning Monday through Friday, beginning at their regular school start time. The most up-to-date distance learning schedule is posted on yumaunion.org as well as each school’s website homepage. Families who have questions are encouraged to reach out to their respective school’s office.

    YUHSD student nutrition services will continue to provide drive-thru, grab-and-go breakfast and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each day. The meals are at no cost for children 18 years of age or younger.

    Extracurricular activities at all YUHSD campuses will be paused, including any in-person winter sports practices. Coaches and club leaders will be permitted to continue to work with students in a virtual capacity.

    Updates will continue to be provided via the Blackboard Connect Messaging system, which provides text, email, and phone calls directly to families. For those who need to update contact information, please log in to your ParentVUE account or contact your school office for assistance.

    Durante una reunión especial de emergencia el miércoles 18 de noviembre la Mesa Directiva del Distrito Escolar Yuma Union votó para aprobar la recomendación de parte de la Superintendente Gina Thompson de que todas las escuelas del Distrito YUHS regresen por completo al aprendizaje a distancia a partir del lunes 23 de noviembre.

    La decisión fue tomada con el interés de fomentar la salud y seguridad de nuestros estudiantes y el personal debido al número cada vez mayor de casos de COVID-19 en todo el condado de Yuma. La mesa directiva junto con el liderazgo de YUHSD evaluarán las cifras métricas de COVID-19 en diciembre y enero para determinar si es apropiado pasar a una oferta diferente de instrucción y cuándo.

    Su estudiante estará frente a la cámara para el aprendizaje a distancia de lunes a viernes, comenzando a la hora regular de inicio de clases. El programa de aprendizaje a distancia más actualizado se publicará en la página yumaunion.org, así como en la página de inicio del sitio web de cada una de las escuelas del Distrito YUHS.   • When does school start?

    YUHSD schools will begin on Thursday, August 6 as regularly scheduled. Students will take part in distance learning ONLY between the first day of school and Monday, August 17.

  • I am incoming freshman and have not been receiving Blackboard messages, what should I do?

    Incoming freshman will not always receive Blackboard communications, prior to YUHSD schools collecting contact and demographic information from those families. If you are not receiving the messages, please contact your school. In the meantime, you may access the most up-to-date information on yumaunion.org.

  • I missed the Chromebook distribution day, what should I do?

  • Will masks be required on campus?

    Students, staff, and visitors to campus and other YUHSD facilities are expected to wear a mask. This is in accordance with ordinances from mayors accross Yuma County.

  • Will students receive breakfast and lunch during distance learning days?

    The YUHSD student nutrition department will provide no-cost breakfast and lunch to ALL YUHSD students during the 2020-2021 school year. In accordance with Arizona Department of Education regulations, when a student is not physically at school, they will be permitted to pick up meals by providing their student identification number in the drive-thru lane from 9-11 a.m. (Monday through Friday). Students must pick up meals from the school they attend.

    Per ADE, non-YUHSD children (18 years old or younger) or YUHSD students purchasing a second meal will be charged the following rates: 

    Student/Child Breakfast - $2.00
    Student/Child Lunch - $3.25

  • What will happen with students with disabilities during hybrid or distance learning?

    We are committed to support the learning of all student and ensuring equitable learning opportunities to enable students with disabilities to progress in meeting learning needs and social emotional learning continues to be the aim of IEP and 504 teams. Our Return to Learning Plan relies heavily on decisions made by each student’s IEP or 504 team.

    Throughout the duration of the school year, parents and families can expect the following:

    • Parents must be involved in any decision about an individual child’s placement or services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) or Section 504.
    • The IEP team will review the specialized services and supports prescribed in the current IEP. They will also document the status of the services and supports during the school closure, as well as the effect of that level of support and service. IEP teams will then ascertain individual needs and determine if the IEP should be amended or rewritten to reflect changes to services and supports, which will include a fully virtual learning plan that can be implemented at any time, if needed.\
    • Special education teachers will continue to collaborate with general education teachers to provide scaffolds, accommodations and modifications for students with disabilities in both physical and virtual settings. Special education teachers will communicate frequently with families to ensure student needs are being met in both the physical and virtual settings.

  • What will happen with Career & Technical Student Organizations?

    All CTE programs will enroll members in their associated CTSO as required by the Arizona Department of Education. CTE students will receive CTE program instruction that will prepare each individual for future competitions should the contests be available.

    Chelle Travis, Executive Director for SkillsUSA said the following about the 2020 SkillsUSA national conference: "Number one, there is nothing more important to SkillsUSA than the health and wellbeing of our members. With so much yet unknown about this virus and how long it might affect us, we could not in good conscience move forward with an in-person event this June. Your health and safety will always be our main priority."
     
    If we can safely participate in contests this coming Spring, we most definitely will compete. Until that time, we will monitor the situation carefully and continue to prepare our students for contests as well as their future industry career.

  • What strategies can we all use to prevent the spread of respiratory viruses, such as the flu?

    • Distance yourself from others, including staying in groups of fewer than 10 people at once. 
    • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
    • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
    • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
    • Stay home when you are sick, and keep sick children home as well.
    • Cover your cough or sneeze, then immediately discard any tissues.
    • Clean and disinfect frequently-touched objects and surfaces.
    • Plan for if/when community spread occurs.

  • What can we do to help prevent and respond to bullying related to the COVID-19 situation?

    Some people of Chinese and Asian decent are facing stigma in their communities, regardless of whether they been exposed to COVID-19. 

    FACT: People—including those of Asian descent—who have not recently traveled to China or been in contact with a person who is a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 are not at greater risk of acquiring and spreading COVID-19 than other Americans. 

    Speak out against negative behaviors, including negative statements on social media about groups of people, or exclusion of people, who pose no risk from regular activities.

    • If you see someone being treated unfairly, do not stay silent. 
      • If you feel comfortable, you can firmly but calmly tell the person to stop.
      • If you don’t want to talk to the person who is harassing someone, you can also focus on the individual who is being treated unfairly. Make small talk, ask them how their day is going, and ignore the person harassing them. 
      • Tips for bystanders are simple actions anyone can use.

  • My chromebook isn't working. What can I do?

    Campus bookstore managers can provide phone support to you.  Please call your campus bookstore between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Bookstore staff will be able to help diagnose the problem and determine if the chromebook needs to be replaced. Numbers for each campuses bookstore are as follows:
