Work-Based Learning Framework
The purpose of Yuma Union High School District's Work Based Learning is to provide students with valuable opportunities to gain practical, real-world experience in professional environments, enabling them to develop essential skills, explore career pathways, and make informed decisions about their future education and employment goals.
Career Exploration
Builds awareness of careers. Career Exploration activities do not take place in the workplaces and are not work-based learning, but provide a foundation of work-based learning and prepare participants to make the most of opportunities.

Career Fairs
A career fair is an event where students explore various career paths through interactions with professionals, gaining insights, networking opportunities, and potential guidance for their future.
Industry Projects
Industry Projects are specific tasks, assignments, or initiatives designed to address real-world challenges, explore new opportunities, or implement improvements within the context of a specific industry. Key characteristics of industry projects may include: relevance to the industry, collaboration with organizations, problem solving or innovation, application of skills and knowledge, and/or learning development opportunities.
Interest Inventories
Questionnaire generated to survey a population in order to determine program and career interest.
Mock Interviews
Mock Interviews are trainining exercises that stimulate a job interview experience. Mock Interviews are designed to practice conversational, professional and interview skills when answering questions with the goal to obtain employment.
Cooperative Exploration
Cooperative Exploration refers to collaborative initiatives where students actively explore real-world industries, gaining hands-on experience, applying academic knowledge, and developing career-related skills through partnerships with businesses, organizations, or educational institutions.
Career Exposure
Brings participants to workplaces for short periods of time with the goal of gaining introductory information about an industry and associated occupations.

Job Shadow
Job shadow is a work experience activity where a student observes and follows a professional on the job to gain insights into the day-to-day responsibilities and requirements of a specific role or industry.
Interviews
Interviews are structured conversations or discussions designed to provide students with insights into various professions, industries, and career paths. These interviews aim to expose students to different career options, help them understand the skills and qualifications required in specific fields, and allow them to gain valuable information about potential career choices.
Information
Information refers to an external way for students to obtain information, career exposure, actively seek and collect relevant information about different careers, industries, and educational pathways.
Simulations
Simulations refer to hands-on, interactive activity or exercise designed to replicate real-world scenarios related to specific careers or industries. collaboration with external organizations.
Company Tours
Company tours involve guided visits or organized tours for individuals or groups to explore and experience the operations, facilities, and culture of a specific company or organization.
Mentorship
Mentoring refers to a situation in which industry members offer (an approved student) multiple times to meet with students to guide them in their career path through student acquiring technical and professional skills pertinent to the career pathway.
Career Engagement
Provides extended opportunities for participants to increase their knowledge of an identified field of interest and gain employability skills and some entry-level technical knowledge or skills.

Internships are structured and hands-on work experience that provides students with the opportunity to gain practical insights into a specific industry, profession, or field of interest.
Service Learning
Service learning is an educational approach that integrates meaningful community service with academic learning goals.
Cooperative Education
COOP is an academic program that integrates classroom learning with practical work experiences in professional settings.
Pre-Apprenticeships
Pre-apprenticeships are preparatory training programs designed to introduce individuals to the foundational skills, knowledge, and practices required for successful entry into formal apprenticeship programs.
Apprenticeship Readiness
Apprenticeship readiness refers to the preparedness, skills, attributes, and foundational knowledge that an individual possesses, allowing them to excel and thrive in an apprenticeship program within a specific trade or industry.
Career Experience
Engages individuals as paid workers to gain specific skills, in conjunction with related classroom or lab instruction, in a particular industry or occupation.
Models include:
Registered Apprenticeships
Registered apprenticeships are structured training programs that combine on-the-job learning with related classroom instruction that is documented in partnership with YUHSD and the industry partner.
Youth Apprenticeships
Youth apprenticeship are on-the-job learning under the supervision of skilled employee mentor(s), related to a classroom-based or technical program for students under the age of 18. This apprenticeship has ongoing assessments over established skills and competencies agreed on by YUHSD and the Industry Partner.
Other Apprenticeships
The different forms of apprenticeship (paid) can come in many forms based on students skill set, industry needs, and CTE Program standards.
Transitional Jobs
Transitional Jobs refers to a time-limited subsidized work experience that helps individual students who may have barriers to employment as well as aid in establishing a work history which develops program specific skills in the workplace.
On the Job Training
On the Job Training is a form of learning and skill development that takes place directly within a workplace or job environment; practical, hands-on experience to enhance their understanding of a specific occupation, industry, or field.
Work-Based Courses
Work-based courses are based on rigorous academic standards and employability skills with in-depth and hands-on work experiences with activities ranging from career awareness and exploration to career preparation and training.
Healthcare Clinicals
Healthcare clinicals typically refer to the hands-on training experiences that healthcare students undergo to gain practical skills and knowledge in a clinical setting. These experiences are an essential component of healthcare education, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge gained in the classroom to real-life situations with patients.Clinical experiences are crucial for preparing future healthcare professionals to provide competent and compassionate care to patients. They provide opportunities for students to develop clinical skills, critical thinking abilities, professionalism, and effective communication with patients and other members of the healthcare team
